Medea
The Narrative
Medea fell in love with Jason, the leader of the Argonauts, when he came to Colchis to capture the Golden Fleece. With her help, Jason succeeded in stealing the fleece and fleeing with Medea. The couple fled to Corinth, where they intended to build a new home. However, Jason ultimately abandoned Medea and married another woman.
Out of jealousy and pain, Medea forged a cruel plan for revenge. She killed not only Jason's new bride but also her own children to punish him. This interpretation shows Medea, who, through an oversized cloth on her head, expresses both grief and carries the heavy burden of her deed upon her shoulders.
"By engulfing the figure in an immense, overwhelming drape, the artist masterfully materializes the crushing weight of mythic tragedy, transforming a symbol of mourning into a monumental, physical manifestation of unbearable guilt and psychological exile."
