Johanna

The Narrative

This work is a visual exploration of the legend of Pope Johanna, who is said to have ascended the Holy See in the 9th century as the learned Johannes Anglicus.

The narrative of the woman who, within a purely male hierarchy, fought her way to the very top through her knowledge and was only exposed by giving birth to a child during a procession, serves here as the foundation for a modern deconstruction.

Instead of depicting the figure in a historical manner, the composition utilizes a sacral austerity to address the tension between power and erasure.

The striking red bar that breaks the figure's countenance functions as a direct symbol of the damnatio memoriae – that systematic purging from ecclesiastical chronicles that befell Joan after her discovery.

The vibrant crimson of the geometry combines the clerical dignity of the office with the human physics that ultimately became her undoing. Isolated on the white pedestal, Joan appears like a timeless statue stepping out of the shadows of history.

The almost hovering gesture of her hand contrasts with the harsh, architectural lines of the halo, illustrating the conflict between individual destiny and the unrelenting dogma of the institution.

Thus, "Johanna" becomes a monument to the truth that remains hidden behind the censorship of the past.

"Through a masterfully controlled Chiaroscuro and uncompromising geometric interventions, the artist unearths the suppressed feminine archetype from the layers of history, transforming an ancient myth into a powerful visual manifesto on identity and institutional silence."
