Eleonore

The Narrative

Eleanor of Aquitaine was one of the most influential women of the Middle Ages. As Duchess of Aquitaine and, through marriage, first Queen of France and later Queen of England, she shaped European history like few other women.

She was the mother of Richard the Lionheart and stood with courage and determination for a self-assured image of women that went far beyond the expectations of her time. She is known, among other things, for her participation in the Second Crusade, which she undertook alongside her then-husband, King Louis VII. In this interpretation, Eleanor is depicted in a humble posture – a reference to the failure of the crusade.

Her chapped lips symbolize the privations and hardships of the three-year undertaking that left their mark on her.

"Stripping away the traditional armor of historical royalty to expose raw human vulnerability, the artist masterfully channels the heavy aftermath of defeat, using a profoundly solemn posture and stark visceral details to capture the enduring resilience of an indomitable spirit."
