Ceres
The Narrative
Ceres is the Roman goddess of agriculture, fertility, and the harvest, and in Roman mythology, she stands for maternal love, the cycles of life, and a deep connection to nature.
She embodies the nurturing and protective power of Mother Earth, which ensures growth and renewal. The story of Ceres is a story of loss and grief, but also of hope and new beginnings.
She was the daughter of Saturn and Ops and the Roman counterpart to the Greek goddess Demeter. Ceres is best known for her passionate search for her daughter Proserpina, who had been abducted into the underworld by Pluto. This story symbolizes the changing of the seasons. Just as Ceres brought her daughter back from the underworld, life always returns after the winter.
This interpretation shows Ceres as a mysterious and elegant woman, subtly capturing her ambivalence and reminding us of the cycles of life and nature. The four sides of the square represent both the four seasons and the heavy physical labor associated with agriculture to sustain the gifts of nature.
"By framing an ancient goddess of natural abundance within a rigid, four-sided geometric enclosure, the artist masterfully juxtaposes the wild fluidity of cosmic seasons with the harsh, structured realities of human toil, grounding divine myth in raw earthly endurance."
